Professor Hamid Aït Abderrahim, a leading figure in Belgian nuclear research, has been honoured with the International Nuclear Societies Council (INSC) Global Award for 2024.

Professor Abderrahim has been instrumental in driving innovation and sustainable nuclear technology. He serves as general manager of the Myrrha project, an accelerator-driven research reactor system to be built at Belgium’s nuclear research centre SCK CEN.

He was previously deputy director-general of the research centre from 2010 to 2022.

His nomination was proposed by the Belgian Nuclear Society. The award was testament to his significant contributions to strengthening the role of nuclear energy for the development of a sustainable society, a statement said.

The INSC Global Award recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of nuclear energy.

The INSC, a global forum for nuclear societies, was set up in 1990 and has a membership of more than 120,000 nuclear science and engineering professionals in 38 national and regional nuclear societies.

The awards ceremony at the University Foundation in Brussels in October was attended by representatives of the Belgian nuclear community, including researchers, industry leaders and government officials.
