Texas-based power utility Vistra has received approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend the operation of its Perry-1 nuclear power plant in Ohio until 2046, an additional 20 years beyond its original licence.

The single 1,240-MW General Electric boiling water reactor unit began commercial operation in 1987 and is currently operating under its initial 40-year licence.

Vistra, which owns and operates the plant, submitted its application for the licence renewal to the NRC in 2023.

Perry is the last of Vistra’s six nuclear power reactors to apply for and receive a licence extension to 2046. Each of Vistra’s reactors is now licensed to operate for 60 years.

The reactors are Perry-1 (Ohio), Beaver Valley-1 and Beaver Valley-2 (Pennsylvania), Comanche Peak-1 and Comanche Peak-2 (Texas), and Davis-Besse-1 (Ohio).

The Beaver Valley, Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear power plants came from Vistra’s acquisition of Energy Harbor, which was approved by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in February last year. Vistra originally announced the $3.4bn (€2.9bn) purchase in March 2023.
