Six CAP1000 units planned for site in Guangdong province
A “super module” known as the CA01 has been installed at Unit 2 of the Lianjiang nuclear power plant in Guangdong province, southern China, the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute said.
Lianjiang-2 is one of two CAP1000 units planned as the initial phase of the Lianjiang station, which will eventually house six such reactors. Construction of Unit 1 began in September 2023 and of Unit 2 in April 2024.
The CA01 module weights almost 1,100 tonnes and measures more than 26 metres long, 29 metres wide and 23 metres high. It is composed of 47 sub-modules and sits inside the unit's containment module where it will house the plant’s reactor pressure vessel, steam generators and other components.
The China Nuclear Energy Association said it is referred to as a super module because it is too large to be transported by road and rail, and was built onsite.
The CAP1000 is China’s indigenous version of the Westinghouse AP1000 pressurised water reactor nuclear plant.
The cost of the two units has been estimated by China-based news outlets at $5.6bn (€5.4bn).
