Ministry says results are best in history of annual poll
More than 92% of Poles support the construction of nuclear power plants in the country, according to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Industry.
The survey also showed that 79.6% of respondents would agree to a nuclear power plant being built near where they live.
The ministry said in a statement that “these are the best results” in the history of the survey, which has been conducted every year since 2012.
The survey showed that 92.5% of respondents support nuclear power plants in Poland, with 67.9% strongly supporting proposals for the country’s first commercial reactors. It showed that 5.9% oppose the plans, with 2.8% strongly opposed.
According to the survey, 90.3% of Poles believe that building a nuclear power plant is a good way to combat climate change. 94.2% believe that building a nuclear power plant will increase the country's energy security.
In November 2022, Warsaw chose Westinghouse to supply its AP1000 pressurised water reactor technology for the construction of three units in the area of Lubiatowo and Kopalino in the northern province of Pomerania.
Poland plans to have nuclear power from about the late 2030s as part of a diverse energy portfolio, moving it away from heavy dependence on coal.
Warsaw wants to reduce carbon emissions and provide baseload energy that can meet increasing electricity demand, which could rise by 36% before 2030.
