IAEA And WANO Announce Plan To Increase Cooperation

5 Mar (NucNet): Almost one year after the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in Japan, the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) say they are increasing their cooperation on nuclear safety.

The two organisations are revising an existing memorandum of understanding in light of the lessons learned from the March 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi accident and will be stepping up efforts to share expertise and knowledge between operators and governments.

A statement said there will be greater coordination between WANO peer reviews and IAEA OSART (operational safety review team) missions, in which international experts assess the safety of individual nuclear power plants.

Discussions are also under way to examine further areas to improve information sharing. “This is in addition to the other work each organisation is doing to reinforce nuclear safety worldwide,” the statement said.
