Third MoU in recent weeks is with South Korea’s Samsung C&T
Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) and South Korean construction and engineering company Samsung C&T Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate and pursue opportunities in civil nuclear energy development and investment internationally.
Enec said the MoU sets the stage for collaboration across several key areas, including potential investment in conventional nuclear projects such as new builds and restarts, and brownfield mergers and acquisitions in the US.
It also includes plans for deployment of small modular reactor (SMR) technologies in the UAE, US, and internationally, evaluation of opportunities in nuclear-powered hydrogen production in South Korea and other markets, investment in US-based nuclear service and equipment companies, and the joint assessment of the development and financing of a nuclear power station in Romania.
It is the latest in a series of significant nuclear-related agreements Enec has signed in recent weeks.
On 28 July it announced an MoU with South Korean construction company Hyundai E&C to explore international opportunities in nuclear energy. Last week Enec and US-based Westinghouse signed an MoU to explore collaboration opportunities for the deployment of nuclear power plants in the US. It has also signed agreements with SMR developers Newcleo and GE Vernova Hitachi.
Enec was established in 2009 to oversee all aspects of the United Arab Emirates’ civil nuclear energy programme, including construction of the four-unit Barakah nuclear station.
The company said earlier that with Barakah fully operational, it is now focused on working with global partners to support the acceleration of nuclear deployment.
